The Night Before Christmas

(je m'excuse, mais la traduction est de moi: j'aime beaucoup le texte, mais je me suis rendue compte que tout le monde ne parle pas anglais, alors j'ai traduis un peu à la va-vite...!)

THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS

'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
C'était la veille de Noël, et partout dans la maison

Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;

Rien ne bougeait, pas même une souris;

The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,

On avait accroché avec soin les chaussettes à la cheminée,

In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there;

En espérant que Saint Nicolas serait bientôt là;

The children were nestled all snug in their beds,

Les enfants étaient confortablement installés dans leur lit,

While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads;

En rêvant de bonbons et autres sucreries;

And mamma in her 'kerchief, and I in my cap,

Et maman dans sa couverture, et moi avec mon bonnet,

Had just settled down for a long winter's nap,

Nous allions  faire une longue sieste hivernale

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,

Quand soudain dehors dans le jardin retentit un tel vacarme,

I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.

Je sautais hors du lit pour voir quelle en était la cause.

Away to the window I flew like a flash,

J’étais en un clin d’oeil à la fenêtre,

Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.

Je remontais la vitre et j’ouvrais les volets.

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow

En bas, la lumière de la  lune se reflétait dans la nouvelle neige

Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below,

Et éclairait les  objets comme en plein jour,

When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,

Et que vois-je apparaître devant mes yeux ébahis,

But a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny reindeer,

Un traineau miniature, et huit rennes minuscules,

With a little old driver, so lively and quick,

Conduits par un petit vieillard, vif et rapide,

I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick.

Je sus en un instant que c’était St Nick.

More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,

Plus rapides que des aigles, ses coursiers arrivèrent,

And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;

Et il sifflait, et criait, et les appelait chacun par leur nom:

"Now, Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen!

Allez, Tornade ! Allez, Danseur ! Allez, Furie et Fringuant!

On, Comet! on Cupid! on, Donder and Blitzen!

Allez, Comète! Allez, Cupidon! Allez, Éclair et Tonnerre!

To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!

En haut du toit! En haut du mur !

Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!"

Et maintenant sauvons-nous! Sauvons-nous ! Sauvons-nous tous !

As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,

Et comme des feuilles mortes qui volent avant l’arrivée de l’ouragan déchaîné,

When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky,

Quand ils rencontraient un obstacle, remontaient vers le ciel,

So up to the house-top the coursers they flew,

Les coursiers volaient jusqu’au-dessus des maisons,

With the sleigh full of toys, and St. Nicholas too.

Avec le traineau rempli de jouets, et Saint Nicolas aussi.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof

Et puis, dans un scintillement, j’entendis sur le toit

The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.

Chaque petit sabot caracoler et frapper.

As I drew in my hand, and was turning around,

Comme je refermais la fenêtre, et me retournais,

Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound.

En un bond, Saint Nicolas était descendu par la cheminée.

He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,

Il portait de la fourrure des pieds à la tête,

And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot;

Et ses vêtements étaient tout tachés de cendres et de suie;

A bundle of toys he had flung on his back,

Un sac de jouets jeté sur son épaule,

And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack.

Et il ressemblait en tout point à un colporteur en ouvrant son sac.

His eyes -- how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!

Ses yeux – comme ils brillaient! Ses fossettes étaient si jolies !

His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!

Ses joues étaient comme des roses, et son nez comme une cerise!

His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,

Il avait une drôle de petite bouche toujours souriante,

And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow;

Et la barbe sur son menton était aussi blanche que la neige ;

The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,

Il serrait bien fort entre ses dents une pipe,

And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath;

Et la fumée entourait sa tête comme une couronne

He had a broad face and a little round belly,

Il avait un visage rond et un bon petit ventre,

That shook, when he laughed like a bowlful of jelly.

Qui, quand il riait, bougeait comme un bol de gelée.

He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,

Il était potelé et dodu, l’image même du vieil elfe enjoué,

And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself;

Et, sans le vouloir, je ris en le voyant;

A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,

Il me fit un clin d’oeil et tourna la tête,

Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread;

Me faisant comprendre que je n’avais rien à craindre;

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,

Il ne dit pas un mot, se mettant de suite au travail,

And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk,

Et remplit toutes les chaussettes; puis, se retournant d’un geste,

And laying his finger aside of his nose,

Et posant son doigt sur son nez,

And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose;

Et, hochant la tête, il remonta  la cheminée;

He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,

Il sauta sur son traineau, siffla ses coursiers,

And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.

Et ils volèrent au loin comme les fleurs d’un chardon.


But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight,

Mais je l’entendis s’exclamer, alors qu’il disparaissait,

"Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night."

“ Joyeux Noël à tous, et à tous une bonne nuit."
